What does a 4-star hotel have to offer? Services guests often don’t know about
A bathrobe, slippers, a different pillow, fresh bed linen or room service. Four stars are not just about a nicer room. A large part of the standard is made up of services guests can request during their stay.

When you book a four-star hotel, you may expect a more comfortable room, a better breakfast and a higher level of service. What is less obvious is how many specific services may form part of the classification standard itself.
The Hotelstars Union 2025–2030 criteria contain dozens of mandatory items for the 4★ category. Some concern the hotel’s facilities, while others are directly useful to guests: you can ask for another pillow, a bathrobe, slippers, a change of bed linen, luggage assistance or secure document printing.
At a glance: what Hotelstars expects from a 4★ hotel
| Area | What is practical for the guest |
|---|---|
| Reception | reception staff for 14 hours a day or staff available on request 24 hours a day |
| Luggage | luggage assistance on request and secure storage |
| Room | towel replacement, additional bed-linen changes, an extra duvet and an extra pillow |
| Sleep | a pillow menu with a choice of different pillow types |
| Bathroom | bathrobe and slippers on request, a hairdryer in the room and additional cosmetic or hygiene products |
| Practical services | laundry and ironing, shoe care, umbrella, adapters and secure document printing |
| Food and drink | drinks available in the room and a 12-hour food room-service offer |
1. Reception is more than a check-in desk
For a 4★ hotel, Hotelstars requires reception to be staffed for 14 hours a day, or staff to be available on request 24 hours a day. Across all categories, guests must also be able to obtain assistance digitally or by telephone 24 hours a day.
In practice, even when nobody is physically standing behind the desk, the hotel should have a defined way for guests to reach assistance.
2. You can ask for help with your luggage
In the four-star category, luggage assistance on request is a mandatory criterion. The hotel should also provide secure luggage storage.
This is useful beyond arrival. If you check out in the morning but your train leaves in the evening, you do not automatically have to carry your bags around all day.
3. Fresh towels — and, at 4★, extra bed-linen changes
Towel replacement on request is mandatory across all Hotelstars categories. At 4★, another practical service is added: an additional bed-linen change on request.
If you need fresh linen before the hotel’s normal schedule, it is worth asking.
4. A forgotten toothbrush need not mean a trip to the shops
Hotelstars requires basic hygiene essentials to be available on request across all categories. At minimum, this includes a toothbrush, toothpaste, a shaving kit and bath or shower gel.
At 4★, additional cosmetic and hygiene products and facial tissues are also mandatory criteria.
5. Wrong pillow? Ask for the pillow menu
One of the least-known services is the pillow menu. Hotelstars requires 4★ and 5★ hotels to offer a choice of different pillow types.
A 4★ hotel must also provide an extra duvet and an additional usable pillow on request. If the pillow is too high, low or firm, you do not necessarily have to settle for what is already on the bed.
6. Bathrobe and slippers may not be waiting in the room
A common assumption is that a bathrobe and slippers must already be in every 4★ room. Hotelstars works differently at this level: both should be available on request.
Having them in the room becomes mandatory only at the higher category. At 4★, simply asking is the sensible approach.
7. Laundry, ironing and shoe care
Mandatory criteria for a 4★ hotel include laundry and ironing services with return by arrangement. The hotel should also provide a shoe-cleaning machine or a shoe-care kit on request.
These are exactly the services guests tend to search for only when they suddenly need them — perhaps before a business meeting or an evening event.
8. Adapter, charging or secure document printing
A forgotten travel adapter or charging problem does not necessarily require buying new accessories. Hotelstars requires international power adapters, a charging station or suitable reductions/adapters on request.
For a 4★ hotel, private and secure document printing on request is also a mandatory criterion. This can be useful for travel documents, contracts or meeting materials.
9. The hotel should provide information — but guests still need to find it
A bilingual Guest Directory, in printed or digital form, is also mandatory for a four-star hotel. It should contain basic operational information such as breakfast times, check-out and the opening hours of hotel facilities.
This reveals a hotel-operations paradox: the hotel may provide the service and meet the standard, yet the guest may never discover it during the stay.
10. Room service is not exclusive to 5★ hotels
For the 4★ category, Hotelstars lists a 12-hour food offer through room service as a mandatory criterion. Hotels classified as garni, serving breakfast only, have the exception described in the catalogue.
For drinks, the classification allows alternatives. A four-star hotel can meet the relevant standard through, for example, a minibar, a 24-hour self-service maxibar or 12-hour drinks room service.
11. And yes — you can ask for an umbrella
An umbrella at reception or in the room is also a mandatory criterion for a 4★ hotel. It is a small detail, but exactly the kind of service you appreciate once it starts raining.
Why do guests often fail to use these services?
Because the problem is not only availability. It is discoverability.
Information may sit on the website, in a pre-arrival email, a paper Guest Directory, the hotel television or an app. But most guests do not want to study a hotel manual. They want to know in seconds whether they can get another pillow, fresh towels or room service — and submit the request immediately.
